The 1 Escudo coin was part of the Second Republic 1974 – 2001 series of Portugal. The coin was minted by the Imprensa Nacional – Casa da Moeda, Portugal between the years 1981 and 1986. The coin itself was made of 80-60% copper, 10-20% nickel, 10-20% zinc and had a plain smooth edge. This circular coin had a raised un-decorated rim. It weighed 3 grams, and had a diameter of 18mm. The known mintage of the 1 Escudo coin is 250,672,999

The back of the 1 Escudo coin features an Escutcheon (Shield coat of arms) above the year of the coin. The legend features the state name REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA.
